The spear, known as the "Vel," pierced the demon's heart, and the blood that flowed from the wound turned the sea red. This legendary event is commemorated annually during the "Soorasamharam" festival, a grand spectacle of religious fervor.  

The temple's history dates back to the 5th century CE, though its origins might be even older. Over the centuries, various dynasties, including the Cholas, Pandyas, and Nayaks, have contributed to the temple's architecture and grandeur.
